Sharon's Reading List

I am not a famous television personally who can influence millions of readers each month, but I do read a lot and would like to share what I read. I have belonged to book discussion groups for several years and because of them, I have read many books I never would have on my own. If nothing else, it will help me to remember what I've read. I will try to list the books by author to make it easier to search through the list. If you decide to read any of these books and would like to share your thoughts on them, you are welcome email me.

Old and New Favorites

I love these books or authors and have read most of the books they have written.
Albom, Mitch. The Five People you meet in Heaven
The story of Eddie and how his death completes him. I didn't read it when everyone else did, but now I know why they all did and talked about it so much.
Brautigan, Richard. Fly Fishing in America, A Confederate General in Big Sur, In Watermelon Sugar and The Abortion
Clark, Nancy. The Hills at Home
I haven't read a book this well written since Cold Mountain. This book is charming and delightful and thouroughly enjoyable. Don't miss it.
Dallas, Sandra . Alice's Tulips
Told by letters, it's the story of a woman whose husband is fighting in the Civil War. I also read The Chili Queen and Buster Midnight's Cafe. She's a good storyteller.
Doig, Ivan. Dancing at the Rascal Fair
Set in early 1900's Montana, immigrants make their home among hardship and love. I also read Mountain Time and Prairie Nocturne. which I like and Bucking the Sun, which I didn't.
Durban, Pam. The Laughing Place
A story about a Southern family and the changes that they all undergo over time. Her first novel.
   So Far Back
Set in Charleston, a woman from two old families deals with ghosts and the past. Very good story
Frazier, Charles. Cold Mountain
I had a hard time getting into this novel, but once I did, I was hooked. I read several parts over and over again, marveling at his phrasing. This book started my recent interest in the Civil War.
Golden, Arthur. Memoirs of a Geisha
It's hard to believe this book was written by a man. I could hardly put this one down.
Hailey, Elizabeth Forsythe. A Women of Independent Means
This is her best book by far, though I have read just about all her novels. I wanted to be Bess.
Hall, Sands. Catching Heaven
It is confusing in the beginning, trying to figure out who everyone is and how they are related to each other. Don't let that stop you, though, this is a great book.
Harris, Joanne. Chocolat
A charming and sometimes disturbing story about a woman who is maybe a witch and what happens to a small French town when she and her daughter decide to open a chocolate shop there.
    Coastliners
I didn't realize this book was by the same author as Chocolat when I first saw it in a bookstore. Charming and well told story about the people who inhabit a small island off France.
    Five Quarters of an Orange
What an incredible story teller this author is. Set in rural France during World War II, it's the story of betrayal and of course, food.
Hearon, Shelby. Life Estates
This is one of my all time favorite books. I've read many of her other books and she is an incredible author, but this is her best.
Hull, Jonathan. Losing Julia
I loved this romantic and realistic story. Julia was the woman loved by two men who became best friends during World War II.
Kidd, Sue Monk. The Secret Life of Bees
Set in the South at the beginning of the Civil Rights movement, it's the story of Lily and how she finds maternal love in the least likely place.
Lent, Jeffrey. Lost Nation
A dark and disturbing yet compelling story about lost souls in early America. A must read.
   In the Fall
Another Civil War love story, but this one continues with the children's story.
Lovelace, Maud Hart.
I started reading her Betsy-Tacy books as a child and loved them, and am fortunate to own all of them. Then I stumbled on her adult writings and loved those too. A very underrated author.
Marson, Bonnie. Sleeping with Schubert
The story of soul of Schubert dwelling in the apartment of lawyer Liza Durbin and the situations that occur with having a ghost as your roommate. Absolutely delightful.

Yet another Civil War story, this time from a woman's point of view. I loved this book.

An uplifting look at life in heaven and life here on earth.
Niffenegger, Audrey. The Time Traveler's Wife
Henry travels throughout time without any way to control it and he meets at different times then marries Claire. It's a very different and captivating love story. A must read.

Love, betrayal, and coming of age in North Carolina.
Pearl, Matthew. The Dante Club
History, literature, murder and more all brilliantly mixed together in this compelling novel.

I took a risk and recommended this book to one of my book clubs. Luckily, they agreed with me about the book. I've read everything she's written.
Proulx, Annie. The Shipping News
A Pulitzer Prize winner and well deserved. I loved her sense of humor with the character's names.
Robbins, Tom. Another Roadside Attraction and Jitterbug Perfume
He definitely looks at the world from a different frame of reference than the rest of us. Those two I listed are my favorites. He also wrote and I read Still life with Woodpecker, Even Cowgirls get the Blues, Skinny Legs and All, Half Asleep in Frog's Pajamas, Villa Incognito and Fierce Invalids Home from Hot Climates.
Sandlin, Tim. Skipped Parts
The first of the Gros Vont Trilogy which includes Sorrow Floats and Social Blunders and were all wonderfully clever and entertaining. A newer book, Honey Don't was just as entertaining.
Shields, Carol. The Stone Diaries
Another Pulitzer Prize winner and by far, her best book.
Smith, Betty. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
I first read this when I was a teenager, but I still enjoy rereading parts of it. Same with her other books, Joy in the Morning and Maggie-Now
Stegner, Wallace. Crossing to Safety and The Angle of Repose
I first discovered Stegner through a book discussion group. Both books are definitely worth the time.
Thayer, Nancy. Three Women by the Waters Edge
Once I loaned this book and never got it back. It is out of print, but I searched and searched and finally found a second copy. Don't ask; I won't loan it again. I've read everything else she's written.
West, Michael Lee. Crazy Ladies, American Pie, She Flew the Coop and Mad Girls in Love
I look forward to all her books coming out. Yes, her.
Witt, Lana. Slow Dancing on Dinosaur Bones
Very creative story with great characters. This was her first novel, and her second, The Heart of a Thirsty Woman was just as well written and entertaining.

The one book I promised myself to read and haven't yet and most likely never will.

Eliot, George. Middlemarch

Needless to say, I haven't listed every single book I've ever read. I can't even remember every book I've read. I've read many of the classics and books that everyone has or should read. But I will keep adding to the list of those read as I remember them, if I feel they are worth listing.
