Greg's Music

Greg loved almost all kinds of music. He loved listening, loved playing and loved going to concerts. He played the electric bass, just like his dad. He seemed to discover bands before they became popular. I am hoping his dad and bandmates will help write this page.

The following letters are from two members of his favorite local bands. Greg didn't miss too many of lftrpllr or Flipp's concerts, and his room had many posters and clippings from the band's appearances.

This is a letter Greg's dad forwarded to me, from the drummer of lftrpllr.
hi fred. my names dan and im the drummer in lftrpllr. i wanted to drop a long delayed note just to say hi and to say how much all the stuff with greg really effected me. i was out of town when greg passed and didn't even really hear about greg untill after all this. the bands effect on greg is probably the greatest honor i have had as a result of music and as a person. whenever anyone asks me what i want to do with music or why i play it i respond that i hope it has the same emotional impact on someone else as it did and does on me. the fact that one of our songs was played at gregs memorial indicates that possibly that goal was achieved. when i was 8 my 13 year old brother was hit by a car and killed. a very good friend died of luekemia when i was 16. i turned to music as a way to deal with pain and as a way to find strength. i guess that is why my emotional attachment to it is so high as well as my desire to pass that strength on to others. i just want to say thank you and im sorry for your loss. but gregs life and memory, the little i know of it, inspires me daily and really gives me a reason to keep doing what i do. i hope maybe the knowledge of this may help ease your pain a bit as you go about dealing with the incredible amount of knowledge and emotion that comes with the loss of a child. thank you fred for helping put greg here. even though i never met him i will never forget him. best wishes.

sincerely
dan monick

I got this recently from a band member of Flipp.

I was very sad the day I heard the news of Greg's passing. I will always remember Greg's smile and upbeat attitude as a member of the band Cosmic Ray. His outgoing attitude was always very pleasant. I enjoyed seeing him at our shows. I have seen a video of his band doing a song of ours called 'Half A Brain'. It really cracked me up. It was an honor that he enjoyed Flipp enough to cover one of our songs. My best wishes go out to Greg's family & friends.

Lifter Puller

This was one of my son's favorite bands. I never heard them play, but he used to go to every one of their concerts. I know he met most of the band members and that he had salvaged the greater part of a guitar they had broken at one of their concerts. He even had a Lifter Puller hat made for himself. Greg loved music, and loved going to concerts and playing in his band. I've had the need to feel him closer to me these last few days, so I've been listening to the music he liked. And crying.

This particular CD was dedicated to Greg. It's called Fiesta + Fiasco. If you have really good eyesight, which I don't, you can read the dedication they wrote. At one point, Evelyn read it to me off her copy of this CD. Some of the band members even showed up at his memorial service and spoke about what knowing Greg meant to them. I know my daughter and son and ex still went to their concerts before the band broke up and communicate with at least the lead singer, Craig.

I've had this CD for over a year. But I never listened to it before today. I listened to the mp3s I have downloaded off of Napster that were by bands I knew Greg liked and sometimes sit and listen to those and cry. Bands like Sunny Day Real Estate, Poor Old Lu, Blink 182 and Rancid. I've learned to like their songs and can sing along to them. I'm sure now that I've opened the Lifter Puller CD, I'll listen to it more and learn to like them. Greg did, and I'm sure he'd like this CD. Only he never got to hear it. At least not on this earth.
